You're not a viking, you're not my son.
The words had been playing like a cruel loop through his head for the last several days since fleeing Berk. There had been a struggle to free Toothless, a fight with people that had been his family, but only saw a traitor looking back at them. He was roughed up, exhausted, and hungry, and he could tell Toothless was feeling the same. The ocean had seemed to go on forever though, with nowhere worth landing in sight.
And then the land mass broke the horizon like a behemoth breaching the waves, more land than he'd ever seen in one place, and it seemed to go on forever even from their high vantage point. He could see the pinprick tell tale signs of civilization dotting the landscape, and they'd decided to land along the beaches of the coastline.
That had been a couple of days ago, and it had been trying to survive since then. He'd tried to go into town a few times, tried to speak to locals, but with nothing of value to offer and no idea where he was, they'd been more or less stranded alone. He supposed it was fine, it was better than Berk, better than a village of people who hated you, his thoughts had been more than a little bitter the more he ruminated on that.
"What do you say? Find a good place to fish? I guess we could fly more inland," He offered, getting a tired croon in response before nodding, "yeah you're right, neither of us are in any condition for that," He sighed and flopped back into the sand. He felt weather beaten and filthy with sea salt, leaving had seemed like the best idea at the time, but he was starting to realize he had no idea how to survive on his own, he was a terrible viking in every way really.

[SOME RANDOM NPCS]
The people of Hemacis were skilled in spreading information in the blink of an eye.
As a small coastal city, it was often overlooked in favor of its larger cousin, Solallen. This suited the people of Hemacis just fine. The watchful Embassy of Ri-Radilan knew it couldn't disrupt the less-than-legal activities of some of its residents without disrupting its economy as well, and so they twiddled their fingers and patrolled the nearby land with relative laziness, never expecting anything more than a few hungry wolves or inexperienced highwaymen.
It had been upon the first time that Hiccup walked into town that the Embassy took note. A scout was assigned to tail him throughout the city and track his movements once he left - though the idea of such a small boy causing any sort of harm was laughable, he was still an outsider, and a weather-beaten northerner at that.
And so he'd been followed, all the way back to his camp, located somewhere along the coastline. Almost immediately was his connection with Toothless noted, and the fastest messenger dispatched to inform War-Queen Ashriji herself of the discovery. She was well-known as the only person who'd ever tamed a Night Fury (though hers were Southerns and Hiccup's was a Northern, but the common folk didn't trifle themselves with such differences; whether or not a large water-dwelling reptile was a crocodile or an alligator was of equal disinterest to them) and it was, of course, presumed that she would take interest.
She would, when word arrived to her in the next few days.
For time being, another scout had been dispatched to watch the small outsider boy. The scout in question was a young male, perhaps around the age of seventeen, wide-eyed and new in the business. Currently, he was peering at the curious duo from the safety of the treeline, peeping through a bundle of leaves.
"-Neither of us are in any condition for that," he heard. The whistling of the coast-winds flung words every which way, and so he only caught a handful of them. From here, it was difficult to tell exactly what sort of state the boy and his dragon were in, but it clearly wasn't good.
Whatever the boy said next was lost upon the scout's ears. He cupped a hand to his ear and craned forward, but still heard nothing; quietly, and apprehensively, he put a single foot forward.
It touched down upon a rock, perched precariously upon loose sand. His foot slipped out from underneath him almost immediately, sending him sprawling down onto the beach below - and, most frightfully, in the direct line of sight of the boy and his dragon.

The ocean winds drowned out the sound of their observer to the boy as he used a stick to idly draw in the sand, but the dragon's head whipped around to where he not only heard, but smelled the presence of someone else. Toothless huffed through his nose and made a slightly uneasy sound, which drew Hiccup's attention as he glanced at the dragon quizzically, "what is it, bud? What's got you bothered?" He asked, the slightest edge of nerves in his voice. He wasn't terribly big or intimidating, so the thought of someone potentially intending them harm made him uneasy, Toothless pulled down his ears and lowered his head a little, then jumped up when a figure tumbled out of cover.
Hiccup jumped up as well with wide eyes, shadowed by the night fury as he stood in front of his much weaker rider protectively, pulling his lips back to display his teeth. The boy scrambled to his feet and came to put his hands on top of the dragon's head, realizing that the boy that had tumbled from cover didn't look that much older than him, "Toothless it's okay, at least I think it's okay?" He eyed the boy hands still running soothingly over the dragon's head to try and get him to calm down.
"If we're somewhere we're not supposed to be we'll go, we just stopped here to rest for a bit," He watched the other boy's movements carefully, lifting a disarming hand to offer to help him up, "do you...That looked like a nasty fall?" He half smiled, trying to lessen the stress of the situation all around.

[NORVIN (NPC)]
The boy - Norvin, he was called - found himself with a mouthful of sand and a number of light scratches. It took a moment for him to shake off his stupor, propping himself up on his elbows and only half-listening to Hiccup's words.
Holding up a hand in surrender, he used the other to wipe off his tongue. "Iff comve in peaff!" he slurred, coughing a little. He spat out the last of the sand. "I come in peace!"
He then pulled himself to his knees. It was then that he locked eyes with Toothless, and felt himself reflexively gasp and recoil at the sight. The most fearsome thing he'd ever fought was a particularly stubborn preying mantis; he'd never gone toe-to-toe with a wolf, much less a dragon. In fact, outside of the occasional silhouette on the horizon, he'd never even seen a dragon up close. (excluding today's previous scouting, of course)
"S-sorry!" he blurted. "D-didn't mean to startle you! I'll just, ah, be on my way!" He scrambled to his feet, a little wobbly, and backed a little towards the safety of the bushes.

Hiccup's hands dropped to his side and he tilted his head, looking puzzled and maybe a little bemused by this boy. Toothless seemed to realize at the same time that the scout wasn't a thread, and sat back on his haunches with his own head tilted to the side. It was kind of amusing, but he also felt bad, because it was clear this kid didn't mean any harm and was scared out of his mind.
"Hey wait! He wont hurt you," he put a hand on Toothless' nose and smiled, "just, hang on okay?" Hiccup gave the dragon at his side a look, and he made a soft warbly sound in response, lowering himself a little and scooting just a little closer to the scout, while Hiccup gave him a friendly smile, "Toothless wont hurt you, you just startled us!" He tilted his head, finally feeling like maybe he could get some answers to the questions burning in his brain.
"Where are we?" He gestured back out to sea with a pensive frown, "we kind of picked a direction and flew there, what shore did we land on?" He shuffled a little when he realized he hadn't given his name, "I'm Hiccup, by the way, I'm not here to cause trouble, just looking for somewhere safe I guess," he explained, home wasn't safe anymore, not with the whole village wanting them both dead, or Toothless dead, he hoped maybe this place would be different.

[NORVIN (NPC)]
Norvin cleared his throat and attempted to flick off the remaining sand, but was encrusted deep into his clothes. He sighed, feeling a bit of his nervousness vanish with the exhaled air.
Once he'd gotten a hold of himself, he rose to his full height and tried to regain his composure. He realized that he was older than this boy; to think - he'd been frightened by a boy! Silently, he thought a prayer of thanks to whatever gods existed that none of his fellows at the Embassy saw that mishap. They'd laugh at him, for sure.
"Okay," he said, holding up his palms apprehensively. He halted his backwards trek. "Okay."
He sucked in a breath. "So. Hiccup, right? I'm Norvin." He saw no reason to not reveal his name, at the least - it wasn't like he'd received orders to treat the outsider poorly. Besides, he'd much rather talk than fight. "Nice to meet you."
There was a second of silence, and then he added, "And, ah, you're near Hemacis. It's a city on the edge of the Hystonian Coast. You know where that is, right?"

Hiccup was glad when he halted his nervous backing away, he wouldn't get any answers if the guy ran off, and he was kind of just glad to meet another human that seemed relatively friendly. He hadn't pulled out a weapon to try and hurt Toothless yet, at least, which was more than he could say for his village back home.
"Yeah, nice to meet you!" He greeted back with a friendly grin, relaxing more now that he had a name for the stranger, and Toothless visibly relaxed as well when the boy did, settling down in the sand and fixing Norvin with a quizzical head tilt.
[/b]"Hemacis...We are a long way from home..."[/b] He shared a look with Toothless, before glancing back to Norvin, shaking his head and rubbing a hand over the back of his neck, "actually no, I've never been this far...Well anywhere..." He nodded to Toothless with a wry smile, "we kind of picked a direction and fled, figured anywhere was safer for him than home," he admitted, it hadn't been fear for himself that drove him away, it had been fear for Toothless, and he didn't regret leaving everything behind for his friend.

[NORVIN (NPC)]
Norvin couldn't help but wince a little at the boy's tale. So he was a refugee, fleeing from some nasty situation back home. Figures. Norvin had never seen a dragon-riding boy before, and wondered to himself what sort of situation could force a person with such a powerful companion out of hearth and home.
He skirted a little closer and crouched down, eyeing Toothless with a reserved sort of curiosity.
"I know that feeling of wanting to leave home," he said. "If it eases your conscience any, I've specifically been told to not harm you, so... there's that, I guess? And, ah, last I checked, it's generally considered a good thing when the people in power don't want you dead." He laughed a little, stilted and jittery.
