TAERINORE CALINIS
[Name] Taerinore Calinis
[Nickname] Taer, Nore
[Age] 24
[Pronouns] He/him
[Affiliation] Ri-Radilan
[Rank/Occupation] Infiltrator
[Alignment] Lawful Neutral
[Dragon] N/A
[Appearance]
A young adult, around 5’10, with lightly-tanned white skin, black hair, and a somewhat bony build. His face is clean-shaven and shockingly average-looking - it is neither soft nor sharp, angular nor curved. In fact, his appearance could be described as stunningly normal, the sort of face you’d lose easily in a crowd. His clothes are similar. Though his wardrobe varies depending on where he’s going, it’s always resemblant of the locals, typically a bit rough around the edges, without any sort of fancy flourishes or identifying quirks.
His demeanor shifts depending on where he’s located, but, like his clothing, it follows the patterns of locals. He’s a social chameleon, capable of blending in wherever necessary. It is often impossible to guess at his true personality and intentions from appearances alone.
[Personality]
Taerinore would best be described as adaptable. A former actor, he long since learned to make an art out of acting, and, as a chronic people-pleaser, put those skills to use by mimicking others to get on their good side. He enjoys being the center of attention just as much as he likes to slip between the gaps in people’s attention; really, what he enjoys most is making people behave the way he wants them to behave. To this end he might be considered manipulative, with a bit of a controlling bent.
During the rare times that he isn’t putting up a facade, he is lazy when praised, motivated by money and respect, and spends his time practicing his mannerisms. His mastery of acting is incredibly impressive, but came at the cost of a perfectionist streak he can’t seem to shake. If he believes that people saw through his facade for even a second, he will spend hours mentally berating himself and honing his skills. He often drives himself to the point of exhaustion in his effort to master his craft.
He has the potential to be a very kind and understanding person, especially given that he’s highly empathetic, capable of reading the emotions in a room or a face so as to react properly. Unfortunately, he spends so much of his time putting up masks that he’s forgotten what his real face looks like, if he has one at all. His sense of self is skewed, and he often seeks materialistic and temporary things to distract himself during the times when he isn’t called to please anybody. This is a self-destructive habit, and often manifests itself as greed, addiction to any number of available drugs, and pushing himself far too hard.
[Backstory]
A back-alley actor from Tenerin, Ceceanor, Taer came into the business early. He was the singular son of an alcoholic father and deadbeat mother, and quickly learned to play the role of the Favorite Child to avoid punishment while his siblings suffered as scapegoats. During this time, he often followed entertainers, finding their antics a welcome distraction. He’d steal money for tickets to the traveling circus, bribe the guards with his father’s alcohol to get a free pass into the local theater, and spend hours sitting at the feet of street performers, listening to their music and stories.
Eventually, the actors in the theater took notice of his repeated presence and took him under their wing. He learned quickly, memorizing all manner of plays and ballads, playing whatever role came his way - the prince or the pauper, the beggar-boy or highwayman. He spent years there, hiding his money in an old lock-box underneath the stage floor to prevent his parents from stealing it.
It was upon a chilly winter evening, at age nineteen, that the War-Queen herself came to town. And, to Taer’s great surprise, she came to his show. When the final act concluded and the actors bowed, Ashriji sought out Taer in the actor’s quarters. She told him she saw opportunity in his eyes, and was interested in learning more about him. So, Taer took his things and the clothes upon his back and departed with Ashriji’s caravan on the long trek back to Sohai.
Showered in luxury that he’d never known before, Taer quickly became accustomed to the lifestyle - perhaps a little too much. So much, in fact, that he was blind to the fact that Ashriji was grooming him for a job. A few years passed before she made the offer, but when she did, he didn’t hesitate to say yes: she asked him to be the court infiltrator, meant for slipping into places and coaxing rumors and information out of the unwitting masses. She sent him on several trial missions after that, all over the Hystonian Coast, to weed out minor threats and ensure that they didn’t start an uprising.
And so his life progressed, the top infiltrator - or at least most praised - of Ri-Radilan. Where she’ll send him next, nobody knows...
