Perhaps the newcomer would have gone unnoticed, had the dragon not already been on edge. Toothless was smarter than a lot of people gave him credit for, he understood what people said to him, watched the village with a sharp eye that didn't miss anything out of the ordinary. Sure, most days he was preoccupied with Hiccup, patrolling the island and the waters surrounding it, checking in on the outpost, or in the hidden world. However, Hiccup was not here, and this made Toothless antsy, especially because he should have been back ages ago.
Just a summit. He'd told Toothless this, just a meeting with the chieftains of the surrounding villages to establish Berk's situation, to sell the lie that the village was on some dinky island now, rather than the colossal paradise they'd really settled on. It should have only been a trip of a couple of days, but Hiccup had been gone for a long time, and while the rest of the village was concerned, Toothless was worried.
It didn't help that shortly after Hiccup went missing, this stranger had showed up. He smelled strange, he smelled of far away places and things Toothless had never smelled before. Maybe he fooled most of the village, but humans were silly and swayed by honey dipped words, dragons were much more intelligent, much more practical.
This wasn't the first time Toothless has slipped off to tail after the newcomer, watching him with a curious expression. A few had commented on how odd it was that he seemed to like the young man so much, because humans were silly. Toothless didn't like the way he smelled, the way he talked or moved. He was wandering the village now with a purpose, find the stranger and follow, and he would doggedly search until he found his quarry.

[TAERINORE]
Taerinore had arrived in New Berk not a week beforehand, under the false name of Sveni Gautson. His alias was unassuming: he was a lone fisherman from a small town far to the northwest called Atlafell, and had gotten swept away by a storm and marooned in the ocean for days on end until he eventually drifted close enough to New Berk for the scouts to find him and pick him up. He was well-meaning but dim-witted, had an undying love for honeyed bread, and was skilled in the art of fishing and not much else.
In reality, he was a spy from the highest rankings of the court of the War-Queen Ashriji herself. His goal was simple - the queen suspected that the tiny island called 'Berk' that the Hairy Hooligans had moved to after their old island burned was simply a ruse, and that they had a larger personal island where they kept their more important secrets. He'd been dispatched with a contingent of scouts, alongside one of the members of the War-Queen's personal Southern Night Fury coven, a smallish-but-bold individual named Avataj. After the scouts had confirmed the island from a distance, he'd boarded a tiny leaky skiff, had Avataj drag it out into the open waters within view of the island, and waited for dawn to crest the horizon that he might be seen.
The past few days had been a hectic rush, though not one he was unused to. People were, of course, suspicious, but many were so confident in the secrecy of their island's location that they saw his presence as nothing more than a genuine mistake. He'd witnessed wonders here, where people lived so in-tune with the dragons around them that their bonds seemed to surpass anything he'd ever seen before, perhaps except the bond between Ashriji and Akkris, which was an admirable one forged in fire and blood. He spent his time befriending the locals and gathering information, sleeping wherever he could find the space and doing odd favors here and there to get in the people's good graces.
There was only one little snag: that damnable Northern Night Fury.
At first, he'd been ecstatic to confirm Toothless's existence. In front of him was the King of Dragons, the individual Ashriji had been looking for for so long! The excitement quickly wore off, though, when he realized that Toothless was smart - smart as any human - and much more jumpy and protective than most. Taer had bathed himself in fish oil to disguise his scent, but it either wasn't enough to fool the Northern's nose or Toothless was just extra cautious of outsiders.
In any case, his dragon-shadow was making life very difficult.
He'd managed to slip away from Toothless last night. The sun was rising now, just as he was finishing up the last crumbs of his breakfast, and he was certain that the black dragon would be on him again quite soon. He was perched near the head of a stream, just a few feet from where it poured off down the cliffside into a basin below, a little ways away from the body of the village itself. He pulled a mirror out of his pocket to take a look at his face one last time, ruffling his hair and fraying the edges of his braids for a little wild touch. Satisfied, he stowed the mirror away, dusted off his shirt, and got to his feet.
Today was going to be a busy day.

If there was one thing Tuffnut disliked about New Berk, it was the vikings tenandancy to hurl curses much more freely after the blonde trickster. Of course, most was warranted, after a well timed prank, or an ill timed joke. Still, it appeared nobody had a sense of humor lately.
Not to mention Hiccup seemed to be nowhere in sight. As well as his other half, although considering Ruffnut was busy winking and wooing the rest of his best friends... he didn't fancy being around her either. "Ugh so bored." He mumbled. Hearing a nearby snap however, he turned his gaze over to watch Toothless.
The dragon following around the stray apparently brought in a few days ago. Truth be told, Tuffnut hadn't really been paying attention. So upon seeing Sveni his eyes narrowed. If only briefly. Tuffnut wasn't a fool to being tricked and he did find it queer that Hiccup was still missing while this man happened to have arrived. Perhaps it was time to do some Thorston sleuthing once more.
With that in mind a lokish grin fell across his face as he leaped off the Dragon Perch he was currently occupying. A flock of terrors immediately taking the spot as he started to head towards Sveni. Watching him with the mirror he tilted his head at first making sure he was out of view before moving closer as the man finally stood.
"Better make sure Snotlout doesn't see that. Got to keep that Jorgenson away from a mirror or hes stuck like a moth to a light." Tuffnut spoke. He found the best way to get to know someone was to talk to them. And if there was one thing he was good at. It was talking.

The dragon's nostrils flared and he narrowed his eyes when the smell of the man in question hit his senses. He could tell there was an attempt to make himself smell like a fisherman, like someone who toiled in the sea, but a Night Fury's nose was sensitive, and beneath the scents of fish were smells of far away. Stranger smells.
He was content to watch from the shadows of his hiding place when he spotted his quarry, watching his motions, his gestures, the way he toyed with his hair. He didn't know why he was doing these things, but he knew it was all suspicious. He'd been stalking him for a few days now, since the stranger smell had caught him, sometimes making himself known, sometimes from the shadows. He was keen to be hidden right now though, until he heard a familiar voice.
Tuffnut. He gave a soft hiss, he liked him the same way he liked all of Hiccup's flock, but he also knew the twins could get themselves into sticky situations, and given he didn't trust this man as far as he could throw him(really really far, mind you), he felt his protective nature rise and override his instinct to stay hidden. Protect the silly one, protect him from the stranger. That was his objective now.
He stepped out of he shadows and gave a greeting sound at Tuffnut, before fixing Sveni with an intense sort of look, an 'I'm watching you' expression to anyone with any sort of ability to read dragon body language.

[TAERINORE]
Taer suppressed a jolt of surprise at Tuffnut's voice. He bit back a wince - he'd been hoping for a few more moments of peace, and if there was one thing he'd learned over the years, it was that mirrors were always a source of suspicion among a foreign environment.
He turned around and gave Tuffnut a friendly wave. Slipping his voice into a Viking-sounding accent, he replied, "That Snotlout fellow sure does love his appearances, doesn't he?" he remarked. He opened his mouth to say a more customary greeting, but stopped himself at the last second when Toothless came slinking out of the shadows. The chase begun anew, as it did every morning between the two.
He crouched a little and leaned towards Toothless, like one might to a strange-but-vaguely-friendly cat. "Good mornin', Toothless." He chose to pretend as though he was interpreting the dragon's piercing gaze as friendly curiosity. Raising his face to look at Tuffnut, he added, "And mornin' to you too, Tuffnut. What are you doing out here?"
