[TYRO (NPC)]
Tyro didn't know a whole lot about Hiccup - he was a cook, and nothing more. He knew even less about Night Furies, and he'd only observed Akkris in passing. Southerns only migrated to the coast for part of the year, too, so it wasn't exactly as though he'd seen one in the wild, and if he did he doubted that he'd do anything but run away. Dragons were fairly uncommon creatures on the continent, and he had to admit that the few he'd seen were back in Sohai; most were under Ashriji's jurisdiction or in extensive zoos.
"Huh," he remarked simply. His hyperactive shaking had subsided a little now that he'd had the chance to relax. He stood silent for a moment, then knocked his heels together and said, "S-so... wanna continue exploring?" Pointing a finger at a nearby street, he added, "T-there's a fishery that way, along with one of the f-few public fountains, though it's a lot smaller than the ones in Sohai."

Hiccup's eyes followed the direction he was pointing and nodded, giving a gesture for him to lead the way, "I'll follow you," he chuckled, falling into his naturally ungraceful gait just a little behind his quicker companion as they pushed their way through the hum of people to the street he'd been indicating. He still couldn't keep his eyes from wandering, and they didn't get far down the street before his feet had wandered as well.
It took him a few minutes before he finally realized that he'd split off from Tyro somewhere in his distracted ambling, but for the moment he thought little of it. He was sure he could find his way back to the main street they'd been walking on, and he was sure he could find his way to the fountain that he'd mentioned.
For the moment though he focused on the small street he'd wandered down, looking around with wild, eager eyes as he peeked into open windows and took in everything that was so entirely new to him.

[(SOME RANDOM NPCS)]
The streets of Sohai were a slurry of colors and cultures. They ran together like wet paint, showcasing design traits from all over the land shamelessly merged together. The wooden buildings flanking the street sported a number of windowsills and similar outcroppings filled to the brim with merchandise; some were blockaded by glass, containing a number of fine silks and jewelry, while others were open-air and stunk of the fish and viscera being carved up within. Though the air was cold, the heat of so many bodies seemed to warm the streets themselves.
One notable intersection along the street branched off into a sizeable alleyway, which had several tentlike shelters stretching from wall to wall like spiderwebs. The fabric came in a gaudy series of warm hues, accompanied by glinting objects that, upon further inspection, revealed themselves to be empty glass bottles, hanging from the wooden tentpoles and swaying in the breeze.
As Hiccup passed by, a shrill cry of, "HEATHEN!" sounded from one of the tents. A haggard old woman, her brown skin sunken and wart-ridden with age, was coiled up upon the floor. The clothes she wore blended in almost perfectly with the tent around her; she would've vanished completely were it not for her face, which was exceedingly unpleasant to look at.

Hiccup was somewhat dazzled by the colors and styles thrown together like some out of whack painting as his pace slowed down to take it all in. He recognized small tells and little hints of his own culture, but for the most part everything was new and incredibly eclectic, a breath of fresh air to the mundane sameness that he'd come to expect from Berk and most of the villages he'd ever encountered. It was almost shocking to him just how refreshing this all was, and just how stuck in a rut he was realizing he'd been in back home.
He took a turn without really thinking about how much farther he was trailing from the street, down an alley way lined with tent-like structures that seemed to tinkle from the bottles that sparkled atop the poles. He was about to investigate what might be inside, forgetting social grace and personal space in his eagerness, when the screech set him on edge and he whirled to face the source of the noise.
At first he didn't even see the old woman receded into the clothes like a snake seeking warmth, but then the pile shifted and he held his hands up, laughing with a mixture of amusement and discomfort, "uhh ha, that's a new one, been called demon before, but not a heathen as of yet!" he tried for a disarming grin, feeling a little on edge that he was being screamed at, and thus having attention drawn to him.

"You're an outsider! A northlander! And you dare wear the holy symbols of Ekairra?" the woman howled. She thrust a gnarly finger at Hiccup's shoulder, which bore a reddish Night Fury insignia. "Disrespectful cod! Damn outsiders, thinking they can come here and spit upon our gods and traditions!"
She shuffled around a bit in her pile, the neverending cocoon of fabrics she wore rustling as she struggled. A few of them sloughed off, revealing more underneath. She twisted around and stuck out a bony arm, scrabbling about the back of the tent until her fingers closed around the neck of a glass bottle, half empty. She pressed it to her lips and took a long, shaky swig, suspicious eyes never having left Hiccup.
When at last she finished, she ripped the bottle from her mouth and brandished it at Hiccup like a weapon. "Well? What do you have to say for yourself, heathen?"

Hiccup's hands never left the defensive position in front of him, of course, he wasn't necessarily afraid of this clearly decrepit old woman, but he still didn't quite enjoy being screamed at, and the accusations seemed to snap him out of the role of the awestruck newcomer and back into the sarcastic chief of the Hairy Hooligans, he laughed and pushed her hand from his shoulder, waving a hand disarmingly.
"Aw and here I thought heathen was maybe a funny way to compliment a guy," he laughed, clearly not terribly concerned with a screaming heretic, which it seemed like this lady clearly was, he stepped back and made a face, he could smell her breath from here and didn't even try to hide that it wasn't pleasant, "I dunno anything about Ekairra or gods, but I do know a thing or two about good manners, and you're tragically lacking," he quipped with a smirk, glad when she pulled back to fetch the suspect drink, which he could only guess at the contents.
He lifted his hands again when she brandished the bottle at him, grinning rather peevishly at her, "you have beautiful eyes, ma'am, the crazy really compliments them." He laughed and tilted his head, "look, I'm sorry for whatever I did to disrespect, but I just got here, surely we can just agree to disagree?" He gave a placating shrug, he didn't know what to say to simmer down the woman, so he'd defaulted to the way he always handled people in a stressful situation.

With every word from Hiccup's mouth the spark in the woman's eyes grew wilder. Her lips moved as though to form words, but the only thing that came out was sputtering and spittle.
"Agree to disagree? Agree to disagree?!? Have you no respect for Ekairra? Some day you'll leave your house and be struck down by holy lightning from their own hands!" she seethed. She threw the bottle at Hiccup's feet, where it shattered a few inches from his boot. A few glistening droplets of vile swill still clung to its broken shards. The woman sucked in a breath and steadied herself, her infuriated shaking subsiding. "Night Furies are holy creatures, crafted by Ekairra themselves. They will send a coven of them to strike you down!"
She wheezed and deflated, the last vestiges of her strength fleeing her. Her voice was raspy, airless. "The gods enjoy their irony."

Perhaps it had been unkind to be so needlessly biting in his reply, but really she'd come after him first, and he wasn't the sort of person to just sit back and allow someone to lay accusations on him, especially when he had no idea what she was prattling on about. Perhaps he had done something unknowingly wrong, but he also knew this was not the normal way to approach such things.
He laughed when she made a statement about lightning striking him down or some other equally terribly punishment she imagined on him, "been there, done that, still kicking lady!" He didn't sound concerned with her threat in the least, "see though that's the nice thing about night fury scales, lightning just kind of grazes them!" He added, stumbling back a little when the bottle was hurled and shattered at his feet, "charming," was all he said in response.
"No kidding? My best friend is a Night Fury! I'm sure he'd love to have a word with you about manners," he gave a look that opened the floor for her to try and one-up that, then smirked, "now that is something we can agree on! They've always had a laugh at me, but one of us isn't a raving lunatic, and I think we all know which one that is," Hiccup was ready to turn and leave this situation, taking a few steps back, [/b]"anyway if we're done here, I'll just take my heathen ways back down this alley, nice to meet you though,"[/b] he gave a flourished salute as he continued to back-step.

[TYRO (NPC), SOME RANDOM NPCS]
The lady rocked back and forth a little, glaring murder. "Of course I know which one that is," she muttered, her expression clearly indicating, 'You.' "Brat."
She pulled a tent flap down and hid herself from view, and that was that. There was a moment of silence while she presumably seethed with hatred, or perhaps uttered a prayer wishing all manner of ills upon Hiccup.
Not a moment afterwards, a very sweaty and shaky boy burst into the alley, panting. He skidded to a stop a few feet away from Hiccup and took a moment to catch his breath.
"Hiccup," he - Tyro, it soon became clear - said, "I k-know you're excited, b-but please d-don't run off like that!" Internally, he cursed himself a little for his stutter; it always seemed to pick up when he was stressed or tired. In this case, he was both. He decided not to add the fact that he was afraid of what Ashriji would say had he lost Hiccup somewhere in the city. He'd never been punished by her without good reason, and her punishments were always fair, but she was skilled at giving off wordless threats.

Hiccup rolled his eyes to show how little he cared about this weird woman and her words, but was glad when she dropped the flap of the tent and stopped glaring him down. He was sure if looks could kill he would be dead where he stood, but luckily for him he was relatively unscathed by her venomous words.
He turned and his eyes widened when Tyro approached, before the realization hit him and genuine guilt crossed his features for a moment, "ha, yeah I guess my wandering eyes got the better of me," he said, the apology clear in his voice before he glanced back at the tent, then the symbol on his shoulder, "I had no idea a place existed where anyone worshiped Night Furies," he admitted, "I suppose I ought to be careful, doubt everyone will be as decrepit as that hag was," he said with a slight chuckle.
He gave Tyro a gentle, good natured nudge, "I wont wander again, take a breath, alright?" He chuckled, "Ashriji doesn't have to know I wandered off like a moonstruck deer," he added that to try and smooth over the boy's obvious distress, before gesturing, "I'm curious about these fountains you mentioned," he added, trying to get back to the flow of the guided tour, and he was genuinely curious as to just what he meant when he used the term 'fountain' in this city.

[TYRO (NPC)]
Tyro lifted a finger as though to speak before doubling over again, hands on his knees, to catch his breath. He'd sprinted through the streets in quite the panic once he'd realized that he'd lost Hiccup.
"I-I guess I forgot to mention that part," Tyro said with a wince. Sure, he'd noticed the scales, and the insignia, but Ekairra worship was atypical along the coast. "Ekairra is the major religion in the s-south. They worship Southerns, specifically, but it's not like m-most of them have heard of a Northern."
And, to be perfectly honest, even he hadn't heard of a Northern until he was assigned to Ashriji's latest expedition.
Having caught his breath, he continued, "R-right. Let's get out of this grimy alleyway and go s-see the fountain, yeah?" He led Hiccup out, careful to not let him escape his eyesight. The fountain was a short distance away, in a plaza similar to (but larger than) the one where they'd previously gotten food. In comparison to the streets, it was spacious and wide, complete with an open-air ceiling.
The fountain that sat in the middle was somewhat large - maybe as large as a horse stall - with a few stone bowls suspended above the middle by a pole, each of which had water running over the edges and into the lower bowl. The bottom reservoir did not have runoff pouring over its edges, though the people who sat near it would often splash the water playfully at one another. The bowls had a few small carvings along their rims, showcasing Viking-style knots and patternwork.

Hiccup looked pensive as he considered those words, perhaps he should have fetched his other clothes, but it wasn't like he anticipated being taken into a place where such a thing would be considered heresy, "guess I should have thought to bring my other clothes along with me, but you know what they say about hindsight," he laughed and shrugged, it wasn't terribly inconvenient, so a few locals might shout at him, that wasn't entirely a new thing to him if he was being entirely honest, he was always getting in trouble with someone or another.
He took a big breath in the much more open plaza they came out into, a welcomed change to the stifling streets they'd come from. He didn't hate the crowds, but he was also glad for the chance to breath in the much more crisp air, his eyes widened considerably when he caught sight of the fountain, and his hobbled pace picked up to see it up close.
"Gods this is incredible!" Hiccup exclaimed, craning his neck to get a good look at the upper bowls that spilled water out like a waterfall fed by a stream. He'd never seen anything like this, and found himself marveling at how it managed to flow like that when it was clearly man-made, "how does it work? I've seen natural fountains, but never anything like this! Where does the water come from? How do you keep it flowing like that?" He looked over at Tyro with wide eyes and a wider grin, he'd never been ashamed to admit when something was beyond the scope of his knowledge, and he'd never imagined there were placed in the world where things like this existed.

[TYRO (NPC)]
Tyro made an awkward sort of noise and angled his chin upwards, in a move that very clearly stated that he didn't particularly know. "I'm not sure. I-I'm a cook, not an architect," he admitted.
He trotted up to the fountain and dipped a hand into the water, splashing a little of it on his face to wash away the last remnants of sprinting. The quiet trill of moving water was a sound that deeply calmed him, drowning out the neverending drone of hawking merchants and city-life chatter.
Hiccup's excitement was almost contagious, and he found himself cracking a smile in short order. In fact, he laughed, if only a little. His mind flashed back to images of the cities along the river, with their massive aqueducts and irrigated crops.
"Just wait 'til we get upriver," he said. "P-people need some way to move water around, especially in the d-desert. It's crazy." He tried to wink promisingly, but wound up making an expression somewhere closer to biting into something sour. He laughed harder, realizing his mistake, and splashed more water onto his face, feeling caught between amusement and embarrassment.

Hiccup chuckled and gave an understanding nod when the boy admitted that he didn't actually know the answer to his question, shrugging a little, []b]"hey no harm here, I mean I don't know how it works either!"[/b] he chuckled, dipping his own hand into the cold water, of course the heavy leather gloves prevented him from feeling it entirely, but that didn't particularly bother him.
He watched Tyro's face as he attempted and failed to wink, giving a well meaning laugh and tilting his head, "I can't wait, so many things here are so new to me," he admitted, sitting on the edge to look around with a heavy sigh, "Berk has always been pretty forward as far as viking capabilities goes," he gestured around them with a glance at Tyro and a grin, "but this place is amazing, so I can't wait to see what else these lands have for me," he already had a million questions, and several ideas, everyone was going to get sick of him when he finally came home.
He stood after a moment and clapped his hands together, grinning, "where to next? Anything else you'd recommend a newcomer to see?" There was a soft chuckle in his words, eagerness lighting up in his eyes.

[TYRO (NPC)]
"W-well," Tyro began, after shaking the water from his face, "since we've got time... we c-could go see the observatory, I guess. I-it's the big building on top of the hill. The climb is really s-steep, though, so be warned that your legs might hurt."
He straightened his posture and rocked back and forth on his heels, burning out some of the nervous energy that seemed to haunt him no matter what he did. The observatory was a fun place. The astronomers were almost always asleep at this hour, and the maids and masons who maintained the building while they were gone would often let him inside as a child to play around in the rafters or observe the archaic, inscrutable notes pinned all across the walls. They'd still let him in sometimes, if he asked nicely enough.
"I d-don't know if they'll actually let us in, but if they do you might enjoy looking at all of the notes," he said sheepishly.
