[TYRO (NPC)]
The reverie of street life was shattered as Tyro barreled down the cobbles as fast as his feet could carry him. In fact, it felt like his soles were on fire - no, his entire lower body was aflame! He didn't know how he ran that fast for that long, but there was nothing if not fear that could motivate him so. Solallen was not the most dangerous of cities, but he still knew it well enough to worry about Hiccup's safety.
"Hiccup!" he shouted, his breath hitching. "Hicuuuuup!"
People shot him strange looks as he blazed past, but he was unbothered by them; to him, they might as well have been nonexistent. He might've toppled a cart or two, and perhaps even a small child, but this didn't bother him.
He made a sharp turn and skidded to a halt. Even through the patchwork wardrobes of the citygoers, Hiccup's scaled armor was unmistakable, like a black thumbprint against a colorful collage. He stumbled forward a bit, propped himself up against a wall with an elbow.
"Hiccup!" he wheezed again, reaching a hand limply for his companion. Now that Hiccup was in sight and confirmed to be safe, he felt his panic melting away, and in its stead rose the slightest sparks of anger.

Hiccup felt all the hairs along his neck stand on end before the hot wash of guilt and shame set in. Tyro! He couldn't believe he'd forgotten about his poor travelling companion. This was the second time he'd left the poor kid with no idea where he'd gone, and he realized the poor kid had probably spent the entire time panicking. He grimaced as he came to slump against the wall, "ah geeze, I'm sorry..." He said, and he was, he hadn't meant to cause so much trouble.
He very much looked every bit like a scolded dragon that knew it had done something wrong as he ducked his head and looked over at him with a guilty look, "I didn't mean to cause so much trouble, I guess I get ahead of myself...Really really ahead of myself," he offered a disarming smile. He hoped the kid wasn't too angry at him, but he also wouldn't entirely blame him if he was, he'd caused quite a bit of headache, more than he'd intended.
"Look I think I've given you enough heart attacks for today, sorry," he apologized again, running a hand over the back of his neck, "why don't we head back to the ship? The sun's going down anyway, and uh..." He shuffled a little, "look I'll make it up to you, alright?" He gave a half smile, hoping maybe he could mend any anger the boy felt.

[TYRO (NPC)]
Tyro huffed wordlessly as Hiccup spoke, trying his damndest to catch his breath. Clasping a hand to his chest, he felt his heartbeat gradually slow, coming down from its painful crescendo.
"D-d-don't do that again..." he said, thumping a fist against his chest twice to clear out the last of the ache. He wanted to snap at Hiccup, to tell him that this really wasn't funny, and he was quite tired of having his mind thrown into a panic, but in a moment of clarity he realized that Hiccup was just curious and naive, neither of which was a thing that should be punished. So, instead, he pulled himself back to his full height and thought for a moment.
He nodded. "S-sure. The ship sounds fantastic right now. I could use a-" he caught his breath and wheezed again, "-rest."
When he managed to regain enough strength to walk, he made sure to match Hiccup's stride, never letting him out of sight. The docks were a blissfully short trip away. The blood-red sails of Ashriji's fleet were a welcome sight to behold - to him, they meant safety, and a warm place to sleep.

Hiccup held up a hand and put the other over his heart, giving the boy a sincere but crooked smile, "I promise, I'll behave and stick by your side," he wouldn't tell the poor kid about his run in with the very angry fisherman, almost being skinned, he figured that part of the story would only serve to worry Tyro more, and that was the last thing he wanted to do, he'd kind of caused enough drama for one day, for a hundred days really.
He let out a breath as they arrived at the docks and Ashriji's ship dominated their view, looking over at Tyro, "I'm not terribly good at cooking, but I can help you out if you'd like? It's the least I can do," he gave him a wry smile, there wasn't much else he was in a position to offer, but a helping hand was sometimes enough.
He was sure his face still read guilty dog as they crossed the plank to board the ship, and he found himself wondering what Ashriji had gotten up to in the time they'd been gone. He'd of been lying if he didn't say he was also ready to rest and recoup.

[ASHRIJI, TYRO (NPC)]
Tyro pointed to his eyes with his fingers, then jabbed them a little at Hiccup's face, in a gesture that clearly said, "I'm watching you." Still, he was a little more at ease now, that was for sure.
"I suppose t-that would be appreciated," he replied, mulling over Hiccup's offer as he set foot on the ship's gangplank. "I-I could always use a helper for chopping up ingredients." He squinted a little, and added, "Though I d-don't know if I'd trust you to not cut yourself."
He waved tiredly at some of the deckhands, who were busy pulling together the final preparations for the second leg of the voyage. The ship was constructed to fare well on both ocean tides and river currents, and needed only a little retrofitting and resupplying before it would traverse upriver. The majority of the fleet that had accompanied them in the Archipelago could not say the same, and so they'd be traveling only with an honor guard of a mere handful of escorts.
Ashriji had spent her time ensuring that this transition was pulled off properly. She'd hired only the most competent of workers to tend to her personally, and had no small amount of trust in their skills, though she knew well how valuable it was to have an overseer for such operations.
She'd expected Hiccup and Tyro to return a little tired from their walk, and perhaps in need of a good bath and meal, but the sight that greeted her was far more disheveled. Tyro's cheeks were still red from overexertion, and his shirt was glued to his skin with sweat. Hiccup, meanwhile, looked like he'd just kicked a puppy and had no way to express his apologies. A quick look-over eased her concern of potential injuries, but nevertheless, it seemed like the two had gotten far more than they'd asked for.
She turned away from the workers she was watching to meet with her prisoner and cook.
"So. Have a fun tour?" she quipped.

Hiccup just kind of gave a good natured laugh at the gesture, but it didn't negate the guilt he felt though, and it showed on his face as they boarded the ship. He watched curiously for a moment as the deck hands and workers made quick and efficient work readying the ship for the trip up the river, before he glanced over at Ashriji and laughed, "oh yeah, Tyro was a gread guide!" He followed this with a softer chuckle, and a guilty grin, "I didn't make it especially easy on him," he turned the apologetic look towards the boy, before glancing back to his captor.
He looked curious as he craned his neck a little to watch the workers busily doing their jobs, "I take it we're gonna be shipping out soon? Where are we headed next?" He was curious what the next stop would be, what kind of place they were heading for.
"This place was amazing, I've never seen so much...Well all of this!" He turned to Tyro and gave another half grin, "I kind of let my eagerness get the better of me and gave him a heart attack just about," he admitted, "I guess I forget not everyone's used to...Well...All of this," he gestured to himself from head to toe, laughing a little at his own joking.

[ASHRIJI, TYRO (NPC)]
"No kidding," Tyro groaned, wiping sweat off his brow. "M-multiple heart attacks," he affirmed.
"All of this, huh?" Ashriji remarked. She gave him another look-over, this time playfully judgemental. "Well. I suppose since you'll be in my company for the next long while, I'll get to witness some of this chaos, won't I?"
"I d-don't doubt it," said Tyro. Ashriji shrugged, as though to somewhat dismiss the claim.
She turned around to make a few gestures at one of the workers, a signal for them to wrap up their work and get the ship ready.
"Our next destination is up the Libathi River, the lifeline of the desert. We'll eventually be reaching the capital, Sohai, though we'll stop by a few other places first - Xirenne, Kiseya, and Orhasli, in that order," she said.

Hiccup looked between them with a guilty expression and laughed, running a hand over the back of his neck. He became very curious though as she went over the stops they would be making along their path to Sohai, the prospect of so many new places was exciting, but something else was tickling at his mind a little bit, the berating words of the old woman coming back to the surface as he caught the red glint of his shoulder guard in his peripheral.
"What is Ekairra?" The question seemed to come out of nowhere, but he looked to his shoulder with a curious expression, "I ran across this very unfriendly old woman," he mused, before tilting his head to the side and looking back over at Ashriji, "she seemed very cross with me over this," he gestured to the night fury silhouette on his shoulder, before resting his hands on his hips.
"Am I going to run into more trouble over this stuff? I mean I like nicknames as much as the next guy, but heathen and heretic are a bit much," he laughed as he said this, but he was genuinely curious about this religion he'd apparently disrespected, the idea of people worshipping night furies was a new concept, but one he kind of thought sounded fascinating.

[ASHRIJI, TYRO (NPC)]
Ashriji chuckled. Hiccup had a great many things to learn if he was to properly adapt to Ri-Radilan, and she supposed that the first lesson of culture would begin now.
"Come," she said, gesturing for the two boys to follow her into the hold. "Let us rest, and then we will talk."
They soon made their way inside, to the small lounge area from before. Tyro practically melted into the nearest chair, and Ashriji kicked back with a lax attitude. Akkris was asleep in the corner, snoring softly.
"Ekairra is the predominant religion of the desert," she began. Though she was not a practitioner of it herself, she knew its practices and peoples all too well. "It's not as popular up here, but there are still a few pockets of worshipers here and there, and they'll only increase in number as we go south, so I suppose I'd tell you about it now.
"I doubt that you'll run into much trouble with it so long as you stay by my side - one of my many steps to become the War-Queen was to become the spiritual leader of Ekairra, and so to swear an oath on it. Anybody who stands by my side is considered equally respected." Her mind drifted a little, and she caught herself thinking back on the ceremony and its many intricacies. "I could go into further detail about it if you like, but to explain why the old woman was cross: there are a number of creatures considered holy within Ekairran doctrine, and as such their likenesses are not permitted to be worn by anybody except those with special blessings. Southern Night Furies are one of the most holy creatures of them all to Ekairra."
She shot a glance at Akkris and smiled. "Though I'd reckon your symbol is of a Northern, not a Southern, but it's no different to most people."

Hiccup followed after Ashriji as she led them into the lounge, flopping down into one of the comfortable chairs himself and listening with rapt attention as she went right into answering his questions. He was glad when she assured him he probably wouldn't run into too much more trouble, he could handle it if it happened, but that didn't mean he particularly wanted to piss off the locals, he was here to learn things, not cause trouble, and it was hard to learn when people wanted to yell at you.
He looked interested as she explained why the woman had gotten so angry, nodding and running a hand through his hair, "that makes sense, but wow...I mean I've met villages that worshiped or deeply respected dragons, but a whole religion?" He sounded amazed, but it also kind of made him pensive as he sat back in the chair and looked thoughtful.
"I spent so much time trying to protect dragons from the outside world, but I guess there was no real need for that..." He let out a long breath, "most of the raiders and hunters we've rescued dragons from came from the Archipelago, I take it that doesn't happen all that much out this way, huh?" He said this jokingly, but it was certainly an eye opener. When they'd moved to New Berk there had been talk of a mass exodus of all the dragons into the hidden world, that hadn't been the route he chose, and now he was glad for it.
"Yeah, Toothless, he's gonna be worried sick about me," he laughed as he said this, but he wouldn't be entirely surprised if the dragon managed to track them down, it wasn't like he was bound to the ground anymore, "by all means, is there anything else I should be especially aware of? I'd rather not get yelled at again," he chuckled, running a hand over the back of his neck.

[ASHRIJI, TYRO (NPC)]
A slight twinge of sorrow entered the crinkle of Ashriji's eyes. "Well, it's not as though the entire religion is structured around dragons, just an odd happenstance," she said. "And as for dragon-hunting... well. There's been a bit of that here and there, certainly, and at least one of the banners has constructed an entire culture around it, though I've done my best to ensure that dragons everywhere are protected, though true coexistence is... rare."
She raised an eyebrow at the mention of Toothless, though pushed the topic no further. She knew her own coven often missed her on her travels, even while under the care of the best stablehands in the realm.
"Anything else... no, I suppose I wouldn't really think so, at least not anything blatantly offensive. You'd be wise to conserve your water, though. It's a valuable commodity in the desert, and though it is socially acceptable for royalty and their company to show wealth by wasting it, I find the act distasteful - and, of course, the last thing I'd want is for the public to assume I'm consorting with the wrong types." She shot Hiccup a sympathetic grin. "It might be a little difficult to get used to, I'm sure, but I always have to be careful about my reputation. Such is the life of those in power."

Hiccup nodded along with her words, letting out a soft sigh and shaking his head, "hunters prowl the Archipelago like packs of wolves hunting sheep," his nose wrinkled distastefully and he made a sound in his throat, "but at least wolves do it to survive, dragon hunters and trappers are just greedy and cruel, they don't play fair."
He looked up at her and tilted his head, it was strange to realize they might not be terribly different, at least when the topic of dragons and their safety was concerned, "yeah? Me too. My people used to lead raids on hunter ships to free trapped dragons, hunters told such extravagant stories about us!" He laughed, "you drop onto their ship dressed like this and no one knows if you're human or not, I'm sure they've got plenty of stories of terrifying fiery demons," he smirked, looking almost proud of this title.
He looked interested when she began to talk about the desert, tilting his head, "not really, I might not be as big a fish as you, but it's dangerous to have a bad reputation among vikings," he sighed, shaking his head, "you end up with people like Grimmel, driving you from your home and burning it to the ground," he said this like it was still a very raw wound, which is was, festering angrily in his heart and making him wish he could have ended Grimmel's life with his bare hands.

[ASHRIJI, TYRO (NPC)]
Ashriji nodded at the mention of hunters. "Dragons are not typically hated as much here as they are up north, but there are still the wrong types who look to make a quick profit off of poaching. From what I've heard, the Archipelago has an incredibly wide variety of dragons, moreso than most areas, so it's no wonder hunters congregate there."
She shifted her weight a little and eased further into the chair, eyes hazy as she relived old memories: battles won, battles lost, and the many screaming matches she'd had with the rulers of those few banners who hunted dragons religiously.
She shook away the memories just as quick as they came, and focused her attention back upon her guest. "Reputations are fragile things," she said with a laugh. "They make it vital to have private spaces like this, where you can simply relax. I've tried my best to let my own personality shine through rather than being too overbearing, though you still need to watch your step sometimes - rumors start from the littlest things." She sighed, reaching a mindless hand up to her shoulder to tug a strand of hair out of her shirt, where it had inexplicably gotten wedged during the hubbub of the day.
"Burned to the ground, hm?" she added, now raising an eyebrow at Hiccup's words. She was careful about what she said, and knew from years of experience that strong emotions made people spill more information than they'd intended to. She knew that Berk had been burned; practically everybody within the Archipelago had some story about its skeletal ruins, and how the village of Berk had vanished completely off the map, only to resurface months later on a tiny nondescript island with a mere fraction of the population.
She didn't know what else Hiccup might say, but she was interested in seeing where this route of conversation went.

Hiccup relaxed and sat back in his seat, nodding along with her words. He'd seen plenty of hunters and trappers, sunk too many of their ships to count, he was glad that at least he seemed to be in the company of someone who shared those particular beliefs, "well if nothing else, it's comforting that there's other people out there who fight to protect dragons," he felt at ease because of that, maybe it was foolish and naive, but it was hard to fight nature.
He laughed and nodded, waving his hands as he spoke, "you're telling me! The rumors people have started about Berkians and me in particular have been...Interesting..." He chuckled, looking a little cheeky, "if nothing else, having a reputation where people think you're some valiant dragon conqueror has its perks," he frowned, "but it causes just as much trouble, I suppose, people want to prove how tough they are so they come looking for a fight." He scoffed, not that he was especially scared of them.
When the subject changed to Berk, and she seemed at least somewhat interested, he leaned forward and looked bitterly to the floor, "yeah, we fought a cold war with Grimmel and his people for months, until they ambushed us in the night and left nothing but a smoldering scar where Berk used to be," there was a bitter note in his voice as he spoke, nose wrinkled in anger, "we lost so many, dragons, humans, we gathered whoever was left and fled into the night," he sighed and ran a hand through his hair, "we did what we could to establish ourselves, it's a small island," he lied, as far as anyone outside of Berk knew, that was all that was left...He wasn't quite ready to tell anyone about New Berk, especially not someone who was his captor.

[ASHRIJI, TYRO (NPC)]
Ashriji listened quietly as he spoke, twirling a strand of her frizzy black hair around a finger. She thought about what to say, her eyes wandering over the wooden planks of the ceiling, the red banners sliding down the walls, the hardened scars upon Akkris's hide, whose rough texture she knew so well she could feel them under her fingers with the merest thought.
Hiccup's words grew guarded - his story was vague, filled with many smoldering gaps she so dearly desired to fill with fact. Her knowledge of the story was somewhat limited. She knew Berk had burned, and resurfaced as a no-name island elsewhere, and had long theorized that they had a secret larger island with the rest of their stock, so confident in her theory that she'd even sent her best infiltrator out in that direction to find it. But she also wanted to hear the words from Hiccup's mouth himself, to know that he trusted in her enough to say such a thing. Once she got him to admit it of his own free will, there would be almost nothing he probably wouldn't be comfortable telling her.
"Loss," she said, with a small sad noise in the back of her throat. "It happens to everybody. I've seen cities leveled to the ground by smoke and flames, lives lost to war and conquest... what matters is not the travesty of the act, but how you choose to rebuild after it." Much of the death and destruction she'd witnessed had been a direct result of her own actions and orders, and she didn't regret a second of what she'd done. It was tragic, yes, but there was no use lingering in the past, and the price people paid with their blood today went forward to ensure peace in the future, such that a price like that might never have to be paid again. She looked back to Hiccup and shrugged, melancholy fading. "The life lesson that I was always taught was that how hard you were knocked down never matters. It's whether or not you choose to get up that will determine your survival in the world."
